One Little Word 2021 | Women’s Photographer in Denver

Well hello there, amazing people – how is this new year treating you? I am full into the swing of things as a top women’s photographer in Denver, and guess what – this year I’ve even started working with some GUYS too! More on that to come though.

I think we can ALL agree that 2020 was… well… interesting.

That’s putting it lightly, right?

Global pandemic. Quarantine. Social unrest & injustice. And those are just a few of the crazy things that happened.

We’re not out of it yet, friends, we are still working through it though and there IS light at the end of the tunnel. As I’m sure you know, small businesses were hit especially hard, and being a women’s photographer in Denver became a little bit of a challenge. But challenges don’t scare me – after all, I chose a genre that is basically a challenge in every way because of the ideas that our culture has about women – so we keep moving forward.

I’m excited to share this word with you today, which is kind of funny, given what the word is. I haven’t ordered my pretty acrylic version of it though, so I don’t have a photo to share with you of the word itself, a photo of me will have to do. And because I keep getting questions on the background – YES this background is available in my studio, it is a favorite for me and I would love to photograph your beautiful self in front of it, contact me to book your session.

For anyone that isn’t familiar with the concept of One Little Word that might like to read the origin and information from the original creator, Ali Edwards, click here.

I’ve said it for years – but New Year’s Resolutions don’t really work for me.

They’ve actually seen over and over again – the experts, that is – that they don’t work for MOST people. If that doesn’t apply to you, you’re awesome, high five. But for the rest of us, those resolutions made with the best of intentions at the start of a new calendar year are… short-lived. Many years ago, a beautiful creator that I followed at the time started a concept of One Little Word instead of a resolution.

This means that you choose one specific word to focus on for the year. You can always change your mind, but this word is something that you can measure decisions on, and incorporate into your everyday life. For me, it is a word that is always in the back of my mind, I have it on the wall in front of my monitor so that I see it in my office every day.

It is a reminder for me of what I want to focus on, so that I can see small baby steps in growth and change, to move me towards where I want to be, and enjoy the process as I’m going.

You can read more about past words here:

2008 – Independence
2011 – Confidence
2012 – Action
2013 – Sticktoitiveness
2014 – Fearless
2015 – Thrive
2016 – Revitalize
2017 – Progress… {over perfection}
2018 – Dauntless
2019 – Action
2020 – Limitless

In 2020, my word was Limitless – ironic, given that we were literally limited in so many things. But it forced me to look outside of the things that I couldn’t control and have peace and faith with the things that I could control.

You’ll notice that there are a few words missing, because I didn’t share them here. That was a really crazy time in my life, and while I can go through hundreds of calendar entries and text messages to try to remember them, I figure my time is better spent on other things, so I will leave those alone.

I’m not a particularly superstitious person, and since this is the 13th year that I’ve done OLW or One Little Word, we are going to call it the LUCKY THIRTEEN. I kind of like the number 13 – it’s a prime number, most people are afraid of it, and when I was a travel agent, I even had clients who didn’t want to sit in the 13th row of the airplane. I got in the habit of asking people if 13 was okay, and one lady told me “honey if the plane is going down, we’re ALL going down, not just 13” – which cracked me up.

The word for the lucky thirteenth year, in 2021 is something that I’m feeling more and more as I get older. At the end of 2020, I turned 39 2.0. Why not 40? Because I refuse to turn 40 when I can’t have a huge and awesome birthday party, so until this is over, I will remain 39 2.0 and then have a party to celebrate! As a top women’s photographer in Denver, I have seen so many of my clients shy away from really truly being themselves because of fear, and I know that this is something that I do as well.

I don’t want to see this in my own life anymore, and I know for DAMN sure I don’t want to teach this to my daughter.

So my word for 2021 is Audacious.

I chose this word after finding this quote: “Her audacity was her crown, and she wore it like a monarch.” – The Charmolypi Writer

Ladies. QUEENS. When we decide to be ourselves, to embrace our gifts and to share them with the world in whatever way we find is best, we are powerful. CRAZY powerful. It’s time to step into this and fully embrace it. It’s time to be AUDACIOUS and step out of the fear that we have been holding onto for far too long.

May we ALL step fully into our power, and lift the women around us up as we do. May we ALL create a generation of strong women so that the next generation can be lifted up even more. May we ALL remind each other that in being AUDACIOUSLY willing to speak our truths and share our stories, we are impacting the world, even if it is in a tiny way. Because that tiny rock thrown into a giant lake still leaves ripples, and the ripple effect of our AUDACITY is something that we may not ever see for ourselves, but we know it’s there.

I really, really miss you all. As a top women’s photographer in Denver, I have unbelievably awesome clients, and I am still working with clients, but I can’t do the events, or larger scale things that I so love doing. SOON ladies – we will be back together. SOON. I have a list of group sessions that I’ve wanted to do for awhile, there is light at the end of the tunnel, and we will KICK ASS when we are able to get back together!

Lots of love and adventures and high fives and chest bumps… whatever your heart needs today.
