Colorado Female Boudoir Photographer – Wear This, Not That – Episode 3 – Neon
Ahhhh neon. The signature color palette of the 80’s, tucked gently between black pieces in bike shorts. Remember those? Ew. I think we all can agree that the bike shorts of the 80’s showed us a LITTLE too much of what was going on down below, if you know what I mean.
Neon has made a comeback. I know I know, this isn’t news. There are some things that I really love about neon, and others that I loathe. Part of me wants to see it go bye bye again – and I think it’s probably on the way out, since it was more difficult for me to find example photos for today’s post! Honestly, I can’t say that I’m heartbroken.
As a Colorado female boudoir photographer – I get it, I really do. Especially when it comes to neon pink. It’s fun – it’s upbeat, it’s loud, a tad obnoxious, but not in a crazy way. Especially when it comes to bras and panties – a little bit of fun underneath a work outfit that has to be kept to a specific standard. After all, if you have to dress appropriately for other people, who doesn’t want to spice things up a bit in ways that your coworkers don’t necessarily have to know about?
But it does NOT photograph well. At least not the super duper bright neons.
Neon is… well, it’s bright. Part of the reason that we love and hate it, right? Some neons photograph better than others – some are just painful to look at. Chances are, if you need sunglasses while you look at a specific outfit, the camera is probably going to pick up that brightness as well. Let’s check out some examples!
First up: bright neon pink. On the left, you’ll see the neon pink option, and on the right, a blue option with a cross dye lace. This pink isn’t as loud as some that I have seen, so it would be better than some other options – but do you notice how much detail is lost in the middle, near the bow? You can barely see the lace. This could potentially be an issue in photos, if you want to see those little details. Especially around areas that you want to show off – which often includes the breasts or cleavage.
Another example with the same piece, in different colors. Unfortunately they didn’t show the blue panties as well, but you can see how bright the pink is, while the blue is more muted, and the focus of the photo tends to be more towards her face.
More pink! Again, I think neon is kind of on its way out – which made it more difficult to see some of the crazy neon colors that have been so “in” lately. This is another example of losing that detail on the left, in the neon pink. There is lace on the outside of the cups that is more difficult to see.
Just because you love neon doesn’t mean that you have to cut it out completely! Believe me, I’m a girly girl too – and as a Colorado female boudoir photographer, I love me some color!
Some of the neons above wouldn’t be as bright, and would still work in your photos. Some of the SUPER BRIGHT colors though, you might want to save. Additionally, there are plenty of other color options too, cutting out the super bright neons doesn’t mean you’re relegated to black only! While I was perusing the website, I came across this purple, which would look beautiful with several different skintones!
Which brings me to another point – consider your skintone. Personally, I’m super pasty white. I do tan in the summer, but then I freckle – so then I’m like kind of tan, with a pasty underneath and freckles on top. Like a fabulous cupcake, right? ;) Your skintone can have a lot to do with which colors are SUPER bright, and which ones aren’t. Try them on, and look at yourself in different light sources – not just the store dressing room. Do you like what you see? Can you still see the detail that is on the lingerie?
If you truly LOVE your neons – bring them. We will rock them anyway. But if you’re kind of meh and not really sure – it might be best to stick with other options.
All of today’s photos are lingerie that is currently available at Victoria’s Secret – they have some beautiful pieces.
It can be daunting to think about what to wear for your boudoir photography session – so much to choose from! I would love to hear what you think – did you bring bright neons to your shoot? Do you love the photos?
