One Little Word 2025 | Colorado Boudoir Studio
Ohhhh, my favorite people online – how are you doing? No, really… how are you doing?
January 31 – the last day of the longest month ever.
At least it feels like that, right? I haven’t been writing much lately. Well, I have, but not here, because there are just so many emotions tied into so many things right now, and I try so hard to remain somewhat professional on my website.
I fail miserably at times – but at least I try.

And then I have clients that I can be myself with, so when they say hey I lost my photos help – I can tell them that they’ll have to have 27 lashes to get them back.
Because the sarcasm and smartassery is very real over here y’all, and I love that I work with clients that GET IT. I always say that I work with the best humans on the planet, and that isn’t just some bullsh*t lip service, it is 100% true, they’re amazing people.
By the way, just in case you were wondering, she accepted her *metaphorical* lashes via email (no, that’s not happening here in my Colorado boudoir studio, don’t get your panties in a wad… unless that’s your thing…) and all is well.
Every time I sit down to write, there are a million things that I want to tell you, and I get overwhelmed. So we are jumping back into writing this year with a simple post that I used to do regularly, and have slacked on lately:
One. Little. Word.
For anyone that isnβt familiar with the concept of One Little Word that might like to read the origin and information from the original creator, Ali Edwards, click here.
There are so many iterations of this, but Ali was the one that introduced it to me back in 2008, and I have continued each year.
Because we all know how successful new years resolutions are… right?
The reality is that they usually don’t work. There’s a lot of research as to why, and those brilliant minds have lots of data to show lots of different results – but for me, I know that it can be overwhelming. We think that we are going to just step into a new version of ourselves quickly and easily, when the reality is that it takes lots of small changes over time to really change our behaviors, habits, and ultimately our identities.
So why do I do OLW instead?
Because the word is a constant reminder.
Every time that I’m presented with a question, or an opportunity, or a decision that I need to make both in my Colorado boudoir studio and my personal life, this word is front and center, and it is a reminder of what I want to accomplish for the year. And the beauty of it is that it can mean so many different things as well. Because the words can apply in different ways and in different parts of our lives.
The word is a reminder for my overwhelmed ADHD brain of what I really want to focus on, so that I can make sure to implement it in the small changes every single day.

2024 – Center
Last year I worked on centering – and again, that meant a lot of different things.
There were times where it meant centering my kids for important events in their lives, even if it was inconvenient or difficult, and sometimes I had to center my work and my Colorado boudoir studio and my clients. And ultimately, I wanted to learn to center myself, to make sure to take care of my own needs and wants, without constantly bowing to someone else.
Which leads me into the next step in 2025, tied closely to Center, my word for 2025 is:
RECLAIM
I have never been a huge Taylor Swift fan. I like her and her music, but I definitely wouldn’t call myself a Swiftie. In the last couple of years, my daughter has absolutely fallen in love with her, and so I hear more and more of her music, and one of lyrics is what inspired this word of the year.

I have spent far too long constantly worrying about what someone else thinks.
So many people tell me that they wish they had my confidence – and yes, that is true, I do have confidence in some areas.
And in other areas, I am a recovering people pleaser who wants to let go of those tendencies and start to worry about my own life, and if someone doesn’t like that, that’s their choice and not mine.
QUEENS. And yes, I know that there are men out there that struggle with this too – but I have worked with SO many women that have a hard time with this – it is time to prioritize YOU.
To choose what YOU want for dinner, instead of always making someone else’s favorite.
To watch the movie YOU want to see, instead of always letting someone else choose.
To do what YOU want to do for holidays or special events, even if it disappoints someone else.
To say NO to things you don’t want to do, even if you know that it might ruffle feathers.
To make decisions based on what you need or want, even if it annoys someone else.
To reclaim your own wants, needs, hopes, dreams, and desires.
I have worked with so many beautiful women that don’t even KNOW their favorites, because they’ve spent so long keeping track of others’ favorite things.
This has to stop.
Taking care of yourself isn’t selfish, it’s necessary, because we cannot be the best mothers, wives, sisters, daughters, and other roles when we are depleted.
And as I’m writing all of this to all of you, I know that I need to hear it as well.
RECLAIM.
Here’s to reclaiming whatever you need in your life.
Whether it’s your time, your choices, your hopes, your wants, your needs, or your body. Take that power back – you deserve it.
Every article is better with a photo, right? This is a photo of a beautyΒ in my Colorado boudoir studio that I happen to know is working on reclaiming some of her own life too. And while I never share clients’ stories attached to photos, I asked and she gave an explicit yes to sharing, and it’s a beautiful detail shot.
