Colorado Boudoir Photographer – Wear This, Not That – Episode 2 – Bridal Boudoir

Well well well, hello Friday!

I am looking forward to a beautiful weekend, and time with my best friend, trying on wedding gowns. No, not me. She is getting married, and I’m SO excited for her! So today we will be at bridal salons, trying on every gown under the sun, to see what she loves!

So with that in mind, and because I have been working with a ton of brides recently – Episode 2 of Wear This, Not That, is going to feature some bridal lingerie choices!

Having worked with hundreds of women in my Denver boudoir studio over the last 7 years, I have seen a lot of different wardrobe choices. Some of them look fantastic, some of them not so much. So many times my lovely clients will assume that it’s because of their bodies – but the truth is, the cut just isn’t flattering on anyone.

I wanted to call out these less than flattering pieces, and give you an alternative. Something that has a similar look, but is SO much more flattering. Obviously, some choices will be more flattering for certain body types, so every piece will not necessarily fit every one of my clients. But if you are considering certain pieces for your Denver boudoir photography session, this will give you an idea of what NOT to choose, and what you could look at instead.

Bridal edition, here we come – today’s choices are all lingerie from Nordstrom.com !

First up – anything that is super baggy. Case in point, this.

I get it. It hides things that so many of us want to hide. But it also hides your shape. It hides everything that makes you, YOU! I’m sure the fabric is beautiful, but the shape is not flattering, and photos in this would hide so many of your beautiful features! So what to wear instead? There are so many options, but really, anything that fits better.

If you really, really want to hide some of the middle parts of your body, this will still hide them but not completely drape you in fabric. MUCH more flattering. I can’t tell for sure without a face, but I’m fairly certain this is the same model in both pieces – one shows her shape, the other hides everything. I know it is tempting to want to hide in fabric when it comes to boudoir photos – but lingerie that FITS is so important, and will look so much better in photos!

That being said, let’s talk about another issue that I see often – we have lingerie that hides everything because it’s too much, but there is also lingerie that has teeny tiny straps that dig into your skin. Example:

This bra, and the whole set really, is beautiful. But the straps are teeny tiny. For some women, this is not an issue. But for some of us (myself included), teeny straps mean digging into skin. This isn’t necessarily dependent on your size, there are several factors that can play into this. Age, family background, size, and so many others. However, if you try on a bra and it is severely digging into your sides and shoulders, may I offer a more flattering option for your Colorado boudoir photos:

These are often called “long line bras,” although I have seen them by other names elsewhere. The longer line under the bust lengthens your body, and is usually very flattering. They eliminate the straps digging into your skin. While it may not be your favorite piece for everyday wear, it also forces you to sit up straight, which is a must for boudoir photos. Sorry ladies, I know slouching is easier. ;)

Another long line option that is lacy and feminine:

I love love love the long line, the lace, and the sheer mesh on the sides to compliment your skin tone. Especially with some lacey panties!

While researching some styles for this post I came up with a TON of different options, so I foresee another bridal episode in the future. Ultimately – this is YOUR session, and I want you to wear what you really love. But as a top Colorado boudoir photographer, I get a LOT of questions on what to wear. Depending on your body type, there are certain pieces that will be more flattering than others – and I want to help you look AMAZING when you come in for your Colorado boudoir photography session.
